LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Write letters to the editors of local publications expressing your point of view about Ed Lee removing the person you voted for to serve as Sheriff.  Be firm, respectful and brief – no more than 200 words. Always include your real name, city of residence, and phone number where you can be reached during the day (most publications will call to verify that you wrote the letter before they’ll publish it).

Points to Include when Writing SF Supervisors

* Ross Mirkarimi has taken full accountability for his mistake. In the words of the assistant District Attorney when the legal process was over -- Was justice served? -- "Yes."

* Mayor Ed Lee had no grounds to removed the elected Sheriff of San Francisco. The action took place before Ross Mirkarimi was Sheriff and was resolved in the courts. If the Mayor can remove any elected official at will, you could be next.

* San Franciscans voted for Ross Mirkarimi as Sheriff for his pledge to continue Sheriff Mike Hennessey's enlightened law enforcement policies based on redemption and rehabilitation. I support Sheriff Mirkarimi's reinstatement and so should you.

  • "Ross Mirkarimi has been sentenced in criminal court. Fulfilling his sentence is sufficient. Removing him from the office he was elected to by the people of San Francisco would be excessive. It would also deprive the San Franciscans who elected him of their chosen sheriff. As a social worker who has seen and worked with the devastation of domestic violence, I am signing this petition because I believe the court's sentence is the appropriate avenue of accountability. As long as the sheriff performs well in his job, he should not be removed from it."
  • "Some city officials are acting like fascists to try to remove a progressive public servant, democratically elected, who advocates for the under-represented."
  • "Ross' stance as a public servant has been to hold people accountable for their actions with punishment that fits the crime, provide opps for rehabilitation, allow for second chances, and look at the source of the problem. There are gradations of domestic violence and Ross' behavior is definitely at the lower end of the spectrum, so the punishment and rehabilitation requirements that he has been sentenced with seem sufficient to me. People voted for Ross because of his political stance on reducing recidivism and providing real opportunities for people to change for the better . . .   • "Enough already, he has been pilloried in the press, prosecuted and punished. He and his family have suffered enough. Let them heal and let him do the job he was elected to. This city has been riddled with corruption for decades, primarily as a result of the collusion between City Hall, the Pac Heights Mob, 'Downtown' and assorted civic 'leaders'.   • "DA Gascon concluded justice was served in response to Ross' admission of an innocuous mistake that neither involved force nor intention to harm. The City Attorney and Mayor knew that Ross only waived his fundamental rights including jury trial in reliance on the prospect of reconciliation with Eliana and resumption of his career. The Mayor suspended Ross as Sheriff with neither pay nor process. In filing official misconduct charges for Ross' expulsion from office, the City Attorney failed to comply with the City Charter by gaining the Board's approval for the City Attorney to represent the Mayor. Why didn't DA Gascon speak out against the City Attorney and Mayor when he knew their actions to defy Ross' expectations in plea bargaining? Instead, the DA got on his soapbox with a false claim that Ross admitted to much more than he did. The DA, the City Attorney and the Mayor have each maligned their respective offices in actions that warrant the label misconduct. Ross was neither in office nor committed misconduct, so set him free of these additional proceedings before the Ethics Commission and Board of Supes that defy the benefit of his bargain. Thank you for your consideration."
  • "This has not been a prosecution but rather a persecution of Ross Mirkarimi and his family. The people of SF voted him in. If bruising his wife's arm in the course of an argument about how long she should keep their son in Venezuela is such a big deal, the people of SF get to determine that at the next election. 
We saw what a big deal it was when Newsom committed adultery with his campaign manager's wife, and when Mayor Lee vowed not to run and then allowed his volunteers to collect prefilled ballots. These would seem to have more of a “nexus” between the office and the misconduct to me. 
I am astounded by the successive rounds of attack in this case, which has no such nexus - first the over-inflated criminal charges and virtual conviction without trial by the Chronicle, then Mayor Lee's suspension without pay edict, now an unprecedented ethics commission hearing for which no one really knows the rules, and finally, another hearing before the Supes as to whether he can keep the position we elected him to. This is a political charade and needs to stop."

Ross Mirkarimi has promised to continue those programs. The other sheriff-candidates wanted to 'lock 'em up and throw away the key.' Imprisoned San Franciscans deserve to be treated with human rights and dignity. That's why I want to see Ross Mirkarimi retain his position as Sheriff in SF."

  • As I've made clear on my blog during Mirkarimi's years as District 5 Supervisor, I think he's been an awful supervisor based on the positions he's taken on a number of issues. But the domestic incident that ended with his plea bargain doesn't rise to a level of official misconduct. The people of SF elected him Sheriff and only the people should be allowed to remove him through a recall or the next election."
  • "As a registered San Francisco voter, I personally will not support any politician that tries to undo what we the voters did in the voting booth. This incident is sad but it does not rise the the level of domestic abuse. This case was tried in the court of public opinion which violated Sheriff Mirkarimi's right to a fair and speedy trial. Counseling was the most that should have come out of this. I hope the registered voters in SF will come together and make sure that our voice is heard for every one of them who doesn't stand up for what's right."
  • "I am a retired social worker who worked extensively in domestic violence, including murder/suicide. Without minimizing what occurred, the incident between Mr. Mirkarimi and his wife falls at the low end of the scale while the media coverage of it has been frenzied, even gleeful. The kind of attention it has received has been out of proportion to the deed. The court, too, appears to have treated Mr. Mirkarimi as though he had done something at the upper end of the scale. It took him a long time to gain permission to see his son once he appeared to have been evaluated out by SF CPS, and his wife still cannot see him even though she has stated she wanted to. Mr. Mirkarimi should have just pled out to the lesser charge & tuned himself into a learning tool for the issue from the beginning, but now that he has taken responsibility, the DV Consortium, the Mayor, and the DA just want blood. There are plenty of people all over the Hall of Justice who have committed much the same thing and worse w/o consequences. Mr. Mirkarimi's and his wife's treatment has not been fair."
